Position:                       Junior Designer

Location:                      Auckland

Our clients currently have a fantastic role for a Junior Designer to join the design team at Newmarket based support office. We’re looking for a highly creative person, who radiates style and has the ability to turn creative concepts and thoughts into reality. 

Your day will be fast paced and often changing quickly to respond to business requirements – so you’ll need to love detail and be able to produce high quality work quickly and efficiently.

A typical day is varied and could include everything from researching trends and building ranges, to design work and support the Design Manager on projects.

What we’re looking for?

We’re looking for a Junior Designer with a minimum of 2 years’ experience within a similar role, a design qualification and extensive experience in Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign.

Excellent Communication skills, strong time management and organisational skill along with being an exceptional team player is critical.

Key Responsibilities:

Brand Awareness 

  • Always up-to-date and knowledgeable of the Brand’s customer
  • Demonstrate brand awareness
  • Understand the brand position within the market 

Customer Focus 

  • Be continually aware of the customer profiles (top, mid and all store) and reflect this in all activities and decisions
  • Develop customer understanding and perspective by attending appropriate meetings, reading relevant reports and listening to/observing customers during visits.
  • Use information gained from customer research and focus groups to inform own decisions
  • Seek and understand the brand objectives, strategy and financial targets for her categories  

Research 

  • Continually research and look out for new and emerging trends
  • Understand the various sources of information for forward trends, colour, fabric and styling and recognises any new sources for inspiration.
  • Work closely with Buyers, updating them on new trends and movements
  • Produce concise and focused trend packs with support from Design Manager covering outlined areas such as silhouette/colour/fabric/details and colour for the season
  • Build inspirational concepts and mood boards for product creation
  • Seasonally create Catwalk overview for specific categories, spotting key trends to allow for first to market items
  • Create Competition shopping reports where required
  • Create trend pack from inspirational trip, if you are required to travel
  • Each season create seasonal fabric and wash trend packs for suppliers/factories to start sourcing fabrics
  • Attend post seasonal meetings to influence areas of focus 

Design and Development 

  • Interpret trends and design product to target customers
  • Use information gained from recent sales to update best seller and/or create new styles
  • Create boards identifying Key volume and Key fashion drivers per allocated categories
  • Create supporting seasonal fabric boards if relevant to your categories
  • Create Wash board if relevant to category
  • Create clear and accurate 2D sketches (freehand or electronic) to be sent to supplier for development
  • Create accurate specification and tech pack to support sketch for supplier to create first fit sample
  • Attend fit session where required
  • Update pervious season key volume drivers 

Branding / Marketing 

  • Support the Design Manager
  • Present the trends and key messages of the season to Marketing, Retail, Digital and Visual
  • Merchandising teams
  • Create a ‘How to wear’ documents alternate weeks supporting product and trends in store
  • Form and maintain relationships with key industry people
  • Create story names and blurbs for each trend story 

Support 

  • Assist the Design Manager in set up and preparations for presentations
  • Assist Designer and/or Design Manager when preparing for inspiration and or development trips
  • Liaise daily with Product Assistant/Assistant Buyers to ascertain any issues relating to product development and sourcing samples
  • Attend meetings as required, with Design Manager/Buyers, which have an impact on style development
  • Organise and archive samples, colour swatches, fabric swatches and magazines
  • Collate imagery and inspiration for archives (scanning / photocopying) including garments
  • Maintain the Design calendar and guidebook
  • Ensure all Trend packs and story boards are saved and updated in the shared drive
  • Maintain Design department workflow when the Designer is on inspirational or development trips

  • Always look for continuous improvement opportunities in all aspects of the department
  • Other related duties as required from time to time
